The Comic Artist and his Assistants is a 2014 ecchi anime series revolving around 22 year old manga artist and self proclaimed otaku pervert Yuki Aito. He has a major obsession with panties and is extremely open about it with his assistants, who are all standard romance anime girls (i.e. extremely pretty yet never having been in a relationship). Naturally, every single one of them falls secretly in love with our protagonist. My issue with this is that the protagonist isn’t really a likeable character. When I cast my mind back to some other anime I’ve watched that have had ecchi elements e.g. Highschool Of The Dead (and a couple of others that I don’t care to admit to watching) I notice how the male protagonist is always the victim of circumstance. What I mean by this, is that he always ends up in awkward situations, but these are through no fault of his own. For example, there’s a scene somewhere in Kiss x Sis where Keita is trying to stop some of his class mates from spying on the girls as they change, but in doing so, he ends up falling through the vent. As a result of this, everyone thinks that he is a sexual deviant. In The Comic Artist and his Assistants however, Aito is simply a bold faced pervert with no shame or desire to keep it to himself and as such, everything that happens to him is his own fault.

Branya!

Branya!

Naming each assistant is tiresome so I’ll just list them by description. There’s the main one who initially dislikes Aito but warms to him, there’s the angry flat chested one who has always had a thing for Aito but is constantly chastising him for talking about her flat chest. There’s the one who looks and acts like a child but isn’t one, there’s the bubbly, huge breasted one who is always cheerful and goes along with all of Aito’s perverted schemes, and there’s Branya the cat who is my favourite character because he can get away with anything. He’s a freaking cat! There’s also the boss whose age is never actually mentioned or alluded to. She looks like a child, but given some of the things she says and does, one would hope that she is also older than she appears. Bottom line: this anime is weird. It’s super weird. Aito is a whiny perv with serious problems and what’s more, I’m pretty sure he cries in every single episode. Not that I’m against males crying, it’s just that 99% of the time, it’s over something stupid like his favourite porn mags getting ripped up. Don’t watch this if you’re even remotely into gender politics. It depicts males as filthy perverts with one track minds, and females as angry psychopath bitches. This doesn’t necessarily apply to all of the female characters, but at least half of them. All in all, it didn’t really have much of a point or message to it, but I do like the fact that the manga artists are regularly shown to work through the night for days on end in order to meet deadlines as this is likely something most if not all manga artists must suffer through. All we need now is an anime about teachers that depicts all the endless marking they have to do.

About The Author

I'm an anime enthusiast (as you might expect). My interests range from the cutesy and colourful to the dark and disturbing. Despite being squeamish, I love horror anime. The more gore, the better! I hope to cover some of the anime that most people are either too embarrassed, or too scared to buy!
